Thanks so much to Rush Beam for his donation of a work of art in a recent auction to benefit Circle de Luz. The art work, Somber Rhythm, netted $200 that will go towards supporting Circle de Luz’s programming.
For those of you new to Hijas, Circle De Luz radically empowers young Latinas by supporting and inspiring them in the pursuit of their possibilities through extensive mentoring, programming, and scholarship funds for further education. Circle de Luz not only gives girls the financial means to pursue an educational program of their choice after high school graduation, it also provides the girls with six years of dynamic programming and mentoring.
From seventh grade, when they are selected until they graduate from high school, Circle de Luz’s Hijas experience two to three programs a month that encourage, inspire, coach, and support them on their journey to graduate from high school and pursue further education. Upon their high school graduation and enrollment in the educational opportunity of their choice, each Hija receives a minimum of a $5,000 scholarship provided to them by women, called M’ijas, who are located all over the country that pool their resources in a giving circle for the six years the girls are in the program. M’ijas can have any background and can live anywhere. They donate a minimum of $90 a year for six years to the scholarship fund that supports each Circle de Luz class and also participate in programming and mentoring as they are able.
How Can You Support Circle de Luz?
You can support our efforts by becoming a M’ija, through Circle de Posibilidad, or by buying a Circle de Luz necklace.
Become a M’ija: Every year, we select a new Circle de Luz class but before those girls can begin their Circle de Luz journey, there must be M’ijas in place to support the scholarship the Hijas receive after their high school graduation. Donors, called M’ijas (girlfriends), are women who make a commitment to invest a minimum of $90 a year for six years to the scholarship fund that will support a class’s Hijas. M’ijas can come from anywhere in the country and can limit their support to a financial commitment or volunteer to support the class in additional ways. If you are interested in becoming a M’ija, email us at circledeluz@gmail.com.
Become a member of our Circle de Posibilidad: In addition to the scholarships the Hijas receive after their high school graduation, we support them through meaningful programs two to three times a month. Donors in our Circle de Posibilidad can hail from anywhere in the country, be male or female, or even represent a group or business. Donations made through the Circle de Posibilidad do not require a six year commitment and can include in-kind support. If you are interested in contributing through our Circle de Posibilidad, email us at circledeluz@gmail.com.
Order a Circle de Luz necklace: Uniquely designed by artist Mary Alice Mitchell to benefit Circle de Luz, the design evokes the moon and star symbolism of Circle de Luz. Handmade at the time of your order at the length of your choice, each necklace is a unique piece of art and all proceeds go to Circle de Luz, allowing us to provide dynamic programming for our Hijas. Email us at circledeluz@gmail.com if you are interested in ordering a necklace.
