One of the things that really surprised me when I was doing the interviews for Hijas Americanas was the most common answer to the question: Have you ever had plastic surgery and, if so, what procedure? Over and over again, I heard nose job. Now, as a kid, I didn’t love my nose. There’s a whole scene in the book about how I didn’t love my nose, but I never thought about it again once my face started to grow into it. My body woes went elsewhere. But, as it turns out, that is not the case for many Latinas. As my interviews suggested, the number one cosmetic surgery procedure performed on Latina women is a nose job. I explore plastic surgery a good bit in the book and even more in one of my talks, and the trend has remained interesting to me.
So, still behind on my magazines, I tackled a few of my back issues last week and came across this beauty special report in Marie Claire’s October issue. Check it out to learn more about the measure some women are going to in order to alter their eyes, skin, noses, and hair (among other things).
