What I love about being Latina: The traditions and sense of pride I carry with me. I was taught at a very young age that one should behave as if they were representing the entire family. I take pride in every single thing that I do, because I represent not only myself, but I represent my family, and Latinas everywhere. It can be a lot of pressure sometimes, but in the end, I’m stronger.
What I love about being Americana: The first Amendment. I have a big mouth… people don’t call me “power to the people” sanchez for nothing! I stand up for myself, and others. This country is full of so many beautiful races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations etc., I’m glad I can celebrate the span of that.
My biggest challenge in growing up Latina in America: Stereotypes. It’s sad that people try and categorize me… I know that they will just end up completely confused. My taste in music, food, clothes, politics, religion, is all very eclectic.
My biggest support in growing up Latina in America: My family… and I’m not just saying that!! I have the most amazing family in the world. No matter what road I’ve chosen to travel my family is right there beside me, constantly giving me support and unconditional love. we have fun together, we pray together, we look out for one another, it’s a beautiful thing to be a part of.
Why I am beautiful: my hands. they reach out to people in need, raise into fists to fight injustice, they are the tools I use to map out my future and express emotions that my mouth is too afraid to utter. In my hands I see my mothers years of hard work at the telephone company and my grandmothers veins pumping the blood that gives me the strength to better myself.
I can not say enough about my hermanita. I am very proud of you you are. I can remember when you were little and how out spoken you were/are ( I have no idea where you get that from). I knew then you were something special. You have talent beyond my wildest dreams. I am always amazed by your words and the wisdom you have beyond your years. I love you hermana…
