BF and I have different last names. I kept my maiden name for all sorts of reasons that I’ll get into in another post some time. Anyway, having a different last name has led to one of my favorite party tricks. Can you call it a party trick when it happens in the privacy of one’s own home, usually when no one else is around at all? Since I can’t get your feedback while I type, I’ll just assume yes.
So, periodically, we get phone calls from telemarketers or solicitors and clearly they’ve been told to ask for the little Mrs. as she is more likely to cave or something else terribly sexist. At our house, these phone calls usually go a little something like this:
“Hello?”
“Hello, may I speak to Mrs. Smith please?”
“I’m sorry. There’s no Mrs. Smith at this residence.”
“Oh.”
Silence.
“So there’s no Mrs. Smith?”
“No, there is no Mrs. Smith.” At this point, they are thinking there was a nasty divorce or I am some live-in girlfriend who has still not been proposed to or something like that and they just want to get off the phone in as dignifed a way as they can.
“I am so sorry, ma’am. We’ll take you, um, this number, off of our list.”
“That would be great. Thank you.”
Usually, BF is lurking when this happens.
“You love that don’t you,” he’ll ask with a smile on his face.
“I do,” I answer. And then we laugh together at my very simple pleasure.
That’s a gorgeous picture of you, honey! And you’re right…it’s the smallest things that mean the most.
LOVE this post. I am not a Mrs either and find great joy (often followed by sadness for the confusion people seem to experience-is this not the 21st century?) in similar situations. Here’s to retaining one’s given surname.
