I didn’t know people waxed their eyebrows until I was a junior in college (which was actually a while ago so maybe that is just when people started waxing their eyebrows). I was a hall counselor which meant that I lived on a hall with one other junior and then 30 freshmen girls. Our job was to guide them through their first year of college. During the first week of classes, one of the girls came and asked me where she could get her eyebrows waxed. I, obviously, had no idea. Fast forward to my teaching years. One of my best friends while I was teaching was the guy that I coached women’s soccer with and he was from Wisconsin, a long way from North Carolina when it came time to celebrate Thanksgiving. Instead, he’d travel to South Carolina with me. Sometime during those three years that we spent having Thanksgiving together, he once looked at me first confused, then amused across the kitchen table at my parents’ house (granted we had meals together probably four nights a week after soccer practice– but, still, he noticed this in front of my family). “What’s up,” I asked. “Your eyebrows don’t match,” he answered. My sister was sitting next to him. “Oh my God, he’s right. You have two totally different eyebrows.” “What?” I asked, thinking who the heck notices eyebrows. And then I ran to the bathroom to scrutinize them. Yep, I did have two totally different eyebrows. But, still, I had no idea where to go to do something about my eyebrows. And I didn’t really care all that much.
Fast forward another year or two, and I had settled into using one hair stylist. I noticed that she waxed other clients’ eyebrows. I decided to try it (even though I no longer worked with Ben every day and so couldn’t instantly show off my new look to him). Now, I go to a woman who specializes in eyebrows. Since I work from home, I often forget about the way my brows look for weeks at a time, but I love Lois and sometimes just need a good dose of her downhome goodness. Whenever I see my sister, she always says, “Gosh, I love your brows,” which totally surprises me– seriously, my eyebrows are your favorite thing about me?
So, imagine my surprise when I read that bloggers around the country were critiquing the eyebrows of one Lourdes Leon. Who? Oh, that would be Madonna’s first born who evidently is supposed to be a high-fashion runway model at the age of 11 (like we all were, right). Fortunately, I read it in a column that took those bloggers to task because a girl, afterall, should just be allowed to be a girl without all of our adult critiques, opinions, and standards being forced on her.

Have you ever tried eyebrow threading? I have some friends who have that done instead of waxing, and they really like it.
As for Lourdes Leon, I’m glad that Madonna’s letting her be a kid. She has her whole life ahead to get waxed, lasered, threaded, etc. She is still a striking young girl.
